The Best Innovative & Unique Closet Door Design Ideas for Bedrooms

closet door ideas

When you’re designing or remodeling your bedroom, closet door ideas can go such a long way. But there’s a problem. Too many choices, not nearly enough time, and nobody to help them sort through it all. That’s where I come in!

If you’ve already landed on a particular interior aesthetic (first of all, congrats!), then the closets can come in and finish the job. Closets have a special skill: anchoring each room’s look to itself as well as to the rest of the home.bifold

Depending on the area and design motif that you’re working with, you might want to consider a number of different varieties of closet door concepts. Some houses tend to lend themselves toward wood, some seem to almost require glass, and still, others look their best when they use a sustainable source like bamboo.

And the same is completely true for color. A simple coat of white paint might be all it takes to update a bedroom and seal the deal.

On the other hand, some bedrooms — or offices — really shine with a glossier finish, or a gray look, or perhaps something in the hazel or walnut family. (Personally, I’m a fan of walnut.)

Honestly, though,  every room is its own thing. Each one is different and has its own unique personality, just like you. Not to be sappy, but it’s true!

To make something really and truly yours, you can take any one of the proven concepts below (or try a few) and apply it to your house, condo, or apartment to bring everything to life in your own distinctive, naturally beautiful way.

Classic French Closet Doors

One of the single most popular closet door concepts comes in a simple package. Some designers propose installing geometric wooden molding on these doors in order to bring out a fresh contemporary appearance.

Louvered Closet Doors

With their slatted design, louvered closet doors allow for constant airflow. If you want to provide fresh air for your clothes without keeping the doors open all day, a louvered design might be the perfect fit.

Closet Door Ideas with Barn Doors

Add sophistication and elegance to your bedroom with some modern farm chic. A wood or bamboo barn door with a gray finish works well with this look and elevate any space. Choose the slide hardware to accent the door or the wall. These are great when you have a small room and don’t have the space for a door or bi fold door to open fully. They also go great with many decor styles from traditional to rustic and can be painted any color.

Custom Geometric Glass French Doors

There’s always a way to take classic decor and make it your own. One easy way to do that is to use custom glass in your closet doors; geometric shapes appeal to a wide range of people and often offer the most interesting and unique looks of all.

Inset Wooden Slide Doors

Few things create such a perfectly clean look as an inset slide door. The traditional wood with a white painted finish allows this style to go with just about any interior aesthetic. The shorter doors in this attic room take up the full wall and provide lots of storage space that would otherwise go unused.

Contemporary Wooden Sliding Closet Doors

Closet doors don’t have to be complicated. Use a simple wood sliding door with square cutouts and a straightforward, undecorated finish to complete an unfussy look for a bedroom or other space.

Rectangular Glass Cutout Closet Door Ideas

You can keep it simple while also making it your own. These glass doors use a rectangular window style with glass cut-outs to make your room feel more open, while also showing off your amazing wardrobe.

Multiple Bi Fold Doors

This is a version of bi fold doors. The main difference is that these are made out of wood instead of a softer material like fabric or paper, making them a bit sturdier than other varieties. You can use two or more sets of bifold doors.

Modern Sliding Closet Door Concept

A single closet door by itself — with a clean modern white finish — can create a contemporary look for your floor space all on its own. With a metal track and matching silver pull hardware, you can tie the whole thing together easily and simply.

Layered Glass Closet Door Ideas

If you want to add a little extra modernity to your bedroom, use varying shades of glass (green work well in a variety of environments) separated by a non-glass component such as bamboo. Sometimes, one layer or level just isn’t enough!

Bifold Doors

If you’ve got some nice height in your bedroom or office, use it! Incorporate some elevated (aka, tall) bifold doors with a bifold hinge to aid in bringing attention to the sense of space and highlight the room’s features.

Here’s a decor that goes with everything… A pair of glass sliding closet doors work well with a contemporary black frame to accentuate the design.

Bamboo Slide Panel Closet Door Ideas

With a larger closet and wall, you may need to cover more space with your doors. Take up the full wall if you need to. If this is the case, then a series of identical doors can serve your purpose very well. As you see with these concepts here, the bamboo has a notched cutout or pull to make it unique while serving a practical hand-held purpose as well.

Ah, walnut. Not the material, the color. There’s just something about this large combination of gray and brown tones that classes up any room in seconds. Easy, breezy, beautiful, walnut.

Trendy Open Concept Floor to Ceiling Doors

To incorporate open concept elements without leaving all your clothes out for the whole world to see, you can use a half-traditional layout. This way, you get privacy for your belongings and the ability to show off some of your handbags or shoe collection at the same time.

Upscale Mahogany and Glass Combination Concept

This is absolutely one of my personal favorites out of the whole list. With wood on one side and glass on the other, you get refined taste combined with a thoroughly modern sensibility.

Glass Triptych Closet Door Idea

This concept both looks and functions similarly to French or double doors, like those we’ve seen above. Here, the closet doors come in sets of 3 instead of 2, allowing for a totally different look with minimal additional effort.

Opaque Glass Cutout Concept

If you want to utilize glass, but don’t want to leave your closet open to the naked eye, frosted or opaque glass is a fantastic alternative. You can either cover the entire closet door area in it or format the doors with cutouts like in the example here — both look equally great in a variety of spaces.

How to Choose a Closet Door Style

With this wide range of different closet door ideas, you might be wondering, “How do I choose a closet door style for my home?” You might also ask yourself, “Is there a best closet option out there?”

These are great questions! But worry not, because I’m going to walk you through it right now.

Here’s some advice on choosing the perfect closet door for you.

Follow this 3 Step Method and you’ll be right on your way!

STEP 1: Go with your gut.

As with any interior design decision, first and foremost, you need to make sure it matches your style. It doesn’t matter what’s in vogue right now, or what’s come and gone out of fashion.

Rule of thumb: If you love it, then you should probably use it. Plain and simple.

STEP 2: Match the style to the space (and vice versa).

In other words, you probably want to go with a closet door concept that fits with everything else in your room. If your entire interior design is browns and gray tones, then a pink closet door with gold hardware might not…well…blend in like you want it to.

Instead, look for something that complements the rest of your interior design. Each room can have its own feel, but overall the personality of your interior will come through in every piece, and that includes your closet.

Rule of thumb: Find something you love that harmonizes with the rest of your space.

STEP 3: Keep your budget in mind at all times.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably done your fair share of window shopping. When I do this, my eyes are usually a lot bigger than my wallet or my bank account.

So, when you go shopping for closet doors, keep your budget at top of mind. Focus on looking at only items that fall within your specified range.

If you go in with a maximum you can spend, you may come out having spent a sizable chunk of your interior design budget without exactly meaning to.

Whenever possible, only entertain the ideas that fit your budget. (And here’s a hint: it’s always possible!)

Rule of thumb: Write down your number and stick to it. A salesperson may try to talk you into something you simply can’t afford.

With all the great selections available, I know you’ll find something that works perfectly for you. And when you do, please let us know which ones you picked! (And invite us over for the housewarming!)

Find the Perfect Closet Doors for You

We just went through a lot of closet door ideas. Keep in mind that not all these styles or designs will go in every bedroom. Use the 3 Step Method I outlined above to pick a few choices that work for you, your design style, and your family’s budget.
