average couch dimensions

When it is time to furnish your home, you want to make sure that you choose the couch that is the right length. When you know how big the couch is, you will be able to choose where it can fit or decide whether you would like to go with a couch that is longer or shorter than the average length. To help you get a couch that is the right style and dimensions of the space, you need to know how to take measurements and the average size of the couch.

The standard length of a couch is about 84 inches. There is some variance in this though, with the range of lengths being between 72 to 96 inches. Sleek armless sofas are going to be more on the lower end of the length scale while a traditional couch is going to be longer because of the arms on it. A loveseat is a little bit shorter, falling at 48 to 72 inches long.

There are different ways that you can choose to measure a couch, but getting the accurate measurements will ensure that it will be able to fit into the space that you need. Let’s take a closer look at some of the different lengths of the average couch so that you can measure it to fit your space.

What is the average length of a couch?

Before you purchase a couch, you need to figure out what the length of the couch is going to be. This ensures that it is going to fit into the space that you want. The average length of the couch is 84 inches, though it is possible to find some as small as 72 and some as long as 96 inches.

When measuring the length of the couch, you will need to go from the furthest edge of the couch all the way to the other end. Count the arms of the couch, no matter how puffy and big they are, to make sure that you are getting the full length and will have room for the couch in your home.

You can also check out the height of the couch. This is going to mark the distance that falls between the highest point of the couch and the floor. Depending on the shape, most couches and loveseats are going to be between 30 to 36 inches tall. If there is a classic arched couch, then it is likely to be taller. A regular couch may be a little bit lower.

Next is the width of the couch. You will be able to measure out the depth of the couch by measuring the outside edge of the couch all the way to the back and the space that is in front of the seat of the sofa and the back of the couch. On average, a narrow or overstuffed seated couch can be 31 inches wide and 21 inches deep. A curved couch or one that is really deep could be closer to 40 inches wide and 26 inches deep.

How Long is a Couch for 4 People?

If you are looking for a long couch that is able to fit up to four or five people, then you need to make sure that it is long. This will make sure that everyone is able to fit on it without getting squished into the couch.

For this many people, it is best to go for a couch that is longer, sticking as close to 96 inches as possible. Just make sure that the room you want to put the couch in will have enough space to have that long of a couch. A sectional couch, which has several components combined together, can be a good option if you need to fit a lot of people on one couch.

How Long is a Loveseat?

Since the loveseat is often only supposed to hold onto two, maybe three, people, it is going to be a little bit smaller than what a traditional sofa will be like. It is possible to find the loveseat as small as 48 inches long, though some larger ones with arms will be a bit longer. You need to measure the arms on the furthest side all the way over to get an accurate measurement of the sofa and to make sure that it will fit in your space.

There are many great couches that you can choose for your home. If you are limited on the space that you are going to have available for the couch or loveseat, then it is important to measure it out to ensure that it is going to fit. If you have some more space, then you will have the ability to go with some of the longer couches. Measuring it out will help you get the best couch, no matter how big your space may be.
